Yo, yo Grimers! We’ve got a great interview and teaser w/ Mark Instinct
Howd you get into making music?
When I was younger electronic music lead my life. I had always messed around with music production software as i was growing up, like easy pc dj and fruity loops (when it used to come in cereal boxes) but it was just something to do after school. After I graduated highschool I began dj’ing clubs and raves around Calgary. But it just got to a point where I wanted to do more. So I decided I would focus on making my own music to play.
When did you realize that making music could be a reality for you?
In 2009 I was laid off from my job at a local recording studio. I had then started to dabble in production. Once i had my first few tunes finished in 2010 I got them released, and it just kinda snowballed into something bigger It was around 2010 that I was like “this is going to be my future”.
Tell us about a show that’s been really memorable for you
Shambhala festival was one of the biggest craziest experiences of my life to date. Just a really good vibe. It makes for really awesome memories.
Tell us a little about the Canadian dubstep scene. Is it pretty similar to the american crowd?
In a sense yeah. I find the rave culture element a lot more promenant in the United States as opposed to the Club element in Calgary. But both countries rage like its the last party on earth!
We’ve seen you working on alot of collaborations lately. Tell us about how you started working with these artists and how you feel it’s changed your production.
I met Efrem Shulz when I was in California. It was kind of funny actually because I had recognized him but couldn’t put my finger on it, until he was like.. yeah! I’m in Death by Stereo… So I had a major fanboy moment, but it was cool and I had just asked him flat out… what would it take to get you on a track? He was a fan of my music, so he was more than willing to get some vocals down for me. After that we wrote “Off the Chain”. It really opened my eyes to the reality that I could make punk influenced bass music, which for me is right up my alley.
Later in 2011 I met Adroa who lives in Kelowna. We had chatted a few times and really vibed. I went out there to start work on an ep and we ended up writing 2 tracks “Pull” and the beat for what is now “Suicide Pill”. When those were finished it was just a matter of getting a couple more tracks done to fill the Ep.
Collab work is always fun, it definitely can get me to think outside the box, but its not always production knowledge. It’s a good opportunity to get insight on just being an artist. With the conversations I have alone I found really helped me shape kind of who I am as an artist, and as a person. Its all about growth mentally and technically.
Do you get to work much with any of the other big name Canadian artists often?
I have recently had the opportunity to remix a song for Canadians ‘Karl Wolf’ and ‘Marc Mysterio’. I am currently however working on a couple tracks with Downlink, and Adroa. I would really like to do a tune with Excision.
Do you have anything big planned for 2012?
There is a Subhuman Tour slated for spring time with Bare, Diesleboy and the rest of the subhuman clan. I am pushing myself this year to just pump out lots of quality sounds and taking my sounds to another level. 2012 has just landed it’s definitely going to be a HUGE year.
What’s your next release?
My next release will be a Collaborative work entitled “NERDS” with Mayhem. It will be featured on his EP forthcoming on Subhuman Recordings.
As well I will have a brand new EP loaded with a bunch of different genres and bpm ranges. I am really excited for it.
